We live in a consumerist world where more is merrier and big is better. We believe happiness is all about the glimmer and the glamor, the excitement and the thrills.

People seem to jump from one sensation to the next in search of joy. From shopping to clubbing, parties and vacations, we seem to never get enough of them. (By the way it is amazing that people who take vacation these days need another vacation to recover from their so called vacation.)

But are we happy with what we have? Have our activities brought us joy or just plain fatigue?

The problem of looking joy in these things is, like getting drunk, the feelings are all gone the next day we wake up. And like a drunk, we start to go again in a spree. And the futile cycle goes on and on.

We all know that worldly things can never give us lasting happiness, but we all want to prove it ourselves.

And so we waste our time.

In the end, we waste our life.

So where can we find joy?

It starts with a “J” and ends in “us”.

Jesus.

Jesus is our joy, in this life and the next. But Jesus too is our guide in finding joy. His life is map to finding real and (ever) lasting happiness.

Together with the Resurrection, Christmas is the most joyful event in history. It is when Divine Joy became flesh and dwelt among us.

So how did Divine Joy entered our world?

He did not enter the world in wealth, power and privilege. He entered poorly and humbly. The shepherd and the wise men did not found joy in the castle of Herod, but in a cave out of nowhere. They did not saw Joy wrapped in gold but in swaddling clothes. Joy is found where you least expect it.

Real joy does not come from stuff-ing yourself, nor going from one high to the next. You could have traveled around the world and only have fatigue to show. Real joy is much simpler, much closer. It is close as your neighbor. Joy is found where you least expect it.

Joy is found in doing the simplest act of love. Joy is to feed a hungry child, to visit the old and abandoned or to comfort the sick. The most joyful people I know are those who have chosen to dedicate their lives to the forgotten and powerless. Their life did not revolved in satisfying themselves but bring joy to those they serve. And amidst all the poverty and suffering they deal with everyday, they have found joy. And it is a joy that the world cannot give. Joy is found where you least expect it.

Joy is found not when you “take em’ all” but when you “give em’ all”.  The more you grab joy for yourself, the more you lose it, the more you give it away, the more it comes to you.

So find joy in love and love with joy.

When people meet you do they say “We ought to thank God always for you”?

Are you a blessing to this world?

Most of us are preoccupied of “being blessed” than “being a blessing” to our neighbor. Yes, we do all have are needs. But life is not about our needs, life is about love. It is really better to give than to receive. Our being increases in the measure we give it away.

Here are some ways you can be a blessing to others.

I. We ought to thank God always for your faith

Are you a person who uplifts people’s faith? Do you draw people closer to God?

As Christians we should be bold in sharing our faith, and therefore know it first (you cannot give what you do not have.)

We live in a culture where God has been put on the benches. We must put God back in the ball game. The Word of God should always be in our lips. Proclaiming the Gospel is not the duty of some, but the duty of each Christian. We must help the faith of others flourish.

II. We ought to thank God always for your Love

Are you known for your charity or lack thereof?

Charity is what defines us as Christians. Jesus said “By your love for one another, they will know you are My disciples.”

The world has never been this populated. Yet, loneliness has never been this great. Mother Teresa said that loneliness is the worst poverty. The world is in dire poverty. Love is a rare and precious commodity these days.

That is why your love is never been more needed. Your little acts of love are what the world is thirsting for. The world is crying out to you “Love me.”

III. We ought to thank God always for your Endurance

Are you a quitter? Or are you a person who runs the race to the finish?

Giving up is easy these days. Many people have lost hope in this life.

The world right now needs heroes, people who have persevered amidst great trials. We need heroes who not only help others, but inspire them to be heroes as well. Heroes who do not know the word “quit.”

Efren Penaflorida, the founder of the Kariton Classroom, is one good example of endurance. When he started helping the children in the dumps in 1999, many ridiculed him. The group had a hard time involving older people to the cause and so they trained themselves to be self-sufficient enough to teach the young kids themselves. The group was able to support itself and its projects by showcasing their talents in staged concerts and performances; and by selling old newspapers, bottles, and recycled products.

A decade after, Efren won the 2009 CNN Hero award.

If Efren quit when the going gets tough, we would have missed being a hero. More than that, a lot of slum kids would have not able to experience the help Efren is giving them now.

God is calling each and one of us to be heroes of faith, hope and love. Will we rise to the challenge?

“We always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling and powerfully bring to fulfillment every good purpose and every effort of faith, that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you.” –St Paul.

No one escapes disappointments. Rich and poor alike experience it. There is no use running away from it. It is a part of life. The only thing left for us to do is deal with it.

Like a lot of things in life, “how you handle” your disappointment is more critical than the actual disappointment itself. Your disappointment can make you bitter or better, it is really up to you. It is your choice.

Our disappointments can also be used to our advantage. We can look at it as a tool, like a hammer. You can use the hammer to beat your head. You can also use it to build a house. It is in your hands.

So how can disappointments be used to our advantage?

It Keep Us Real

Disappointments remind us the fact we always forget, we are not perfect! We are a work in progress. Our disappointments make us realize that there are a lot in us that needs improvement. There is always a danger when we are riding the winds of success to think we are perfect. And perfect people do not need to improve. To be disillusioned that we are perfect is to stop growing. And anything that stops growing eventually dies.

It Makes Us Stronger

Surviving our disappointments makes us wiser and tougher. It also makes us more realistic. It makes us realize both our strength and weakness. What “to do” and most of the time what “not to do”. Disappointments help us make wiser and better decisions in the future.

Virtues only become virtues when they are put to the test. You cannot exercise courage when you are being beaten by a pillow. But you need courage when life hits you in the gut. No one perseveres when everything is peachy. Perseverance comes when all hell breaks loose and you still choose to continue to move forward.

Disappointments can be like a furnace that forges us to be tough as steel.

The best soldiers are those who have the scars to prove it.

Consider it all joy, my brothers, when you encounter various trials, for you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. And let perseverance be perfect, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. - James 1:4

Bitter or better?

Pick your pick.

Most of us feel like the odds are against us.  Life seems to be one wave of trial to the next. We fight so hard not to get swept away.  But there are times we are so tired, that the easiest way to end it all is just to drown.

It is easy to give in to despair in this world we live in. Hope seems to be just an imagination to some of us.

Is there are reason to hope?

Can we beat the odds?

Yes!

There was a man who beat the greatest odds of all, death! And He wants to share this victory to us as well.  In Him we can do everything. He Himself will be our strength.

His name is Jesus.

In Christ, there is hope. In Him there is victory. No matter how big our problems, He is always infinitely bigger.

Our victory over our trials might not be the way we envision it, but it will still be a real victory.  The crucifixion of Christ was the greatest defeat by the standards of the world. But it was the greatest victory the world ever saw. Christ defeated death by dying… and rising again.

The grace to overcome our trials, pain and suffering is always available and always sufficient.

Let Christ live in you and be a good cheer!

He has conquered the world.

… and your problems as well.

Do you feel that your sufferings never end? Does the darkness have overcome the light?

If you are alive then you have experienced suffering somehow. If you are like most of the humanity, trials, pain and suffering is daily part of your life. You have desperately tried to escape it, but it seems to be always waiting around the corner.

Is it time to give up?

Give in to despair?

Is there hope for you and me?

Yes.

Hope has a name, Jesus.

Easter is all about hope. It is about God’s love becoming man and defeating the worst of evils, death. The darkness has not overcome the Light. The Son still shines.

But how do we gain this hope? How do we experience this victory over evil?

It starts with Faith.

It is a faith that trusts God and his actions, whether favorable or unfavorable, convenient or inconvenient to us. It is not a selfish faith. Most of the time, when we say we have faith in God, deep inside what we actually mean is “I believe God will give me what I want”.

Most of the time we use faith to get something out of God. “I will have faith in God because I want to be blessed”. Or “I will have faith in God so I will not have any problems.” It is a faith that has nothing to do with God, only with one self.

The faith I am talking about is a trusting God that whatever happens is for our own good. It is a faith that accepts the crosses that life brings us. Having faith in God does not mean we are exempted from the problems of the world, but it means that we will be given the grace to handle it. Christ Himself said, “If you want to follow me deny yourself and carry your cross.”

To have faith in Jesus is to be certain that the cross in not the end of the story. The end of the story is Easter.

Problems, pain and suffering will always be a part of life in this fallen world. But God has promised us that if we have faith, hope and love in Him, we shall survive them all. God will not always take away our crosses, but He will always give us the grace to bear it. Only we need is faith.

Problems, pain and suffering is does not have the last word.

“Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my word shall not pass away.” – Mark 13:31

Jesus is the last and everlasting word.

Many of us seem to get stuck in the past. Even though it is far behind us, we just cannot let it go. While we strain our necks looking back, the present slips us by. All the opportunities to make our present and future better are wasted.

Why are we so addicted to licking our old wounds? What satisfaction do we get from it? Does revisiting the pain makes us feel alive? Have we identified ourselves with our past pains?
Whatever our reason is in getting stuck in the past, we loose!

We are not creatures of the past.  We were created to live in the present. Only in the present can we experience life. The future is only an imagination at the moment.

Even God is not the God of the past. Everything in God is present. Only in the present can we experience God’s love for us.

Whatever past hurts we are holding on to, we must let it go.  We cannot let our life stand still, while time moves on. Time does not wait for anyone. The time we lost is lost forever.

The future will only be better if we make it there. To get stuck in the past is to miss a better future by nonappearance.

Hope is always at hand. We seldom see it because our heads are always twisted in looking back.

Everything is in front of you.

Look ahead.

Step forward.

Better things are waiting for you.

Do you live a boring or even a jaded life? Does your life consist of meaningless series of events? Do you feel that you are just passing through life instead of living it?

We live in a high technology world, yet people were never so bored, so jaded. We are like Tarzan, swinging from one activity to the next just to feel alive. But even in our business, we cannot escape our deep boredom.

The fire within has died because the gas has ran out.

So how do we set our lives on fire?

Jesus is the fire that will set us ablaze.

The fire of Jesus is different from the fire we know. We know that for the fire to blaze it needs to consume its host, like wood. And sooner or later the wood will be burnt out, leaving only ashes. The Lord’s flame is far different. It is like the burning bush that Moses saw. The bush was on fire but not consumed!

Jesus wants to live in us, but he does not want annihilate our personality. Instead like the burning bush, He wants to lift us up to a higher state. The fire of Christ will build on our very nature. There will be no conflict, only radiance.

Most of us are afraid to let Jesus in us. We are afraid that He will burn some part of us that needs to be cleansed. But Christ will only burn what is destroying us, our sins. And all our good quality will be set ablaze. Jesus wants us to be a light to the world.

So what are you waiting for?

What are you afraid to loose?

Your boredom?

"I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!” Luke 12:49

H
ave you ever been bullied? Most of us have been bullied one way or the other. Once in our life someone had tried to dominate us and step on our self respect.

Bullying happens when someone tries to dominate another person with the use of force. Are not we all guilty of trying to dominate others? Our “force” might take different shapes and forms, but it is still a “force” to take down others.

Those who try to dominate are actually small insecure people. They bully others to feel big. It is a way to cover up their smallness. They prey on the weak because they are to coward to pick somebody their own size.

I have seen this kind of bullying not only in school, but in relationships as well. It is always the insecure partner who does the bullying. The first part of the bullying starts by demoralizing his partner. After the partner is in a weakened state he can then proceed to dominating her. One of the most popular weapons of choice is blame. He will blame his partner with everything. And leaves himself immaculate. His partner will believe all his blames and thus she will submit herself to him.

These bullies typically target their partner’s self respect. Once they are able to step on that, it is a free reign for them. They now feel big knowing they are the ruler of the relationship.

Unfortunately, a lot of people let themselves get bullied in their relationships. They typically say, “I have accepted the good and the bad of my partner”. But what if the bad goes to worse? To worst? Would you still accept it? Why?

If a person loves you, or at least respects you, he will not try to dominate you. Love does not dominate, it serves. Love does not step on others but it lifts. Love’s hand is not open to grab and pull but to reach out and help.

If your partner is stepping down on you, it is time to step out.

You are not a door mat.

Do deserve a lot more.

Do you value style more than substance? Are you just loud and no melody?

Most people these days have devoted their time, energy and money in showing off. Their lives revolve on being someone who they are not. They become so absorbed trying to live the lifestyle to which they do not belong. They love to be seen even though there is nothing to see (in them).

They love to be shocking to get attention. They are like colorful balloons. They look pretty on the outside but all air in the inside.

These people seem to have everything except themselves. In their pretending they have forgotten who they really are. They have come to be ashamed of their past life, friends and mostly their past selves. They will desperately protect their status quo even if their actual status is a big K.O.

But these pretenders cannot escape themselves in the end. Their shallow ways of life will soon evaporate. And then, they will only be left with themselves, their real selves. They will have to look at the man in the mirror whom they hate and deny.

On the contrary, a person of substance is a person who does not pretend. He knows who he is, no more no less. He is joyful of his strengths and aware of his weakness. He tries to improve himself, but he does it based on reality. He does not change his “acting”, but he changes his being. The more he changes himself for the better, the more people respect him. He does not need to pretend to be someone who is not because he knows it is useless.

A person of substance does not try to win the approval of others. But others try to win his approval. He does not have the desire to shock and awe others. He knows that silent waters run deep.

Stop pretending.

Be yourself.

Be your better self.

Is your relationship based on intimacy or is it to fulfill your selfish fantasies?

There are some people who pursue and enter relationships not out of love but out of selfishness. They use their partner and their relationship to live out what they saw in the movies or TV. They are more focus on reenacting their favorite movie scenes than the person in front of them.

These selfish people get upset in the wrong things. Basically they get upset if their fantasies are not met by their partner. They don’t listen to reason! They only listen to themselves.

They also don’t care much about their partner. Their partner is only a means to satisfy their selfishness, their ego and their fairy tale.

Their relationship is somewhat unreal as well, for it is run by the fantasies of the selfish partner. The actions of the egotist are not done out of love, but to live out his desired fairy tale.  He is living in his own little world, not on the real one.

Unfortunately this kind of fantasy relationship ends up ugly. Once the partner of the egotist fail to satisfy the egotist’s fantasy, the egotist leaves the relationship. The egotist will once again prowl for another victim to satisfy his fantasies. And leaving his partner hurt.

It is really hard to have a relationship with a selfish person. The only relationship he can have is with himself.  It is a “me, myself and I” relationship.

And they lived unhappily ever after.

Every Christmas I visit a poor family to bring some noche buena. This year the verse "Love your neighbor as you love your self" was ringing in my head. So I decided not to be a cheap skate and give to this family what I will be having myself this Christmas.

"Whatever you did to the least of my brethren you did it to me"

We gave 110 families noche buena package (spaghetti, sauce, cheese, milk, fruit cocktail, fruits and ham). Plus another 50 for the mountain people.

We also had games for the children.

It was a blast.

Our problems can sometimes make us feel that we are at the bottom of a dark, damp and lonely place. Like the belly of a whale.

I believe God permits the problems in our lives for our own good. Ugly as they are.

Jonah is a good example of this. God wanted him to preach to Nineveh. But Jonah did not want to. So he decided to escape God by going the opposite direction, Tarshish.

So what happened to Jonah?

Because of his cowardice and disobedience, he ended up in the belly of a whale.

It is in the whale’s belly, that Jonah repented and subjected his life to God and to His will. After three days, the whale spat him to dry land. He then went to Nineveh and fulfilled the mission God gave him.

And now Jonah is one of the great prophets in the Bible.

If Jonah did God’s will in the first place, it would have saved him a lot trouble. Is it not true for us as well?

Could it be that we are being swallowed by all sorts of problems because we are headed the wrong direction?

Could it be that God is permitting all our sufferings to get us back on track?

Could it be we are in the belly of the whale because God wants us to repent and give our lives back to Him?

Jonah’s greatness lied at Nineveh, but he went the opposite direction. It took a whale to get him back. He needed to be in the belly of the whale for three days to make him realize what his life meant.

If you in the belly of the whale right now, think. Maybe you are there for a reason. Maybe what you are suffering now is God’s way of getting you back and bringing you closer to your greatness.

And when it is all over, you will realize that all you’re trials has brought you where you are supposed to be.

To your own greatness.

Have you ever said to God, “Can I have a rain check?” Or “I am still busy pursuing my thing here. I will get back to you later.”

Most of us are guilty of this.

We have placed God on the sidelines or on the shelf.

Growing up we were thought to pursue our careers. We seldom hear people telling us to pursue our vocation. “Be a good doctor.” is more often heard than “Be a good follower of Christ.” Because of this kind of environment and philosophy, we have put all our hopes on our careers. We have come to believe that having a successful career would automatically bring us joy and fulfillment.

Having a successful career is not the end goal of our life. It is just a part of it. God created us with a certain purpose in mind. Each and one of us have a certain role to play in His great drama titled “Life.” Our vocation is finding that purpose, discovering that role. Only when we realize and live that purpose, that role, can we find true fulfillment and joy.

A fish is happy when it swims. A bird is happy when it flies. They are happy because they doing what they are created to do.

A fish out of water is an unhappy fish. A person who is not living his vocation is an unhappy person.

"In His will is our peace." - Dante Alighieri

Discerning God’s calling to our lives should be our priority. It is our priority simply because we want to be happy, we want to be fulfilled. To delay is to postpone joy and fulfillment.

No more excuses!

Get with the program.
